Alumni Speaker Series

Friday, November 5, 2010

8:45-11:45am (3 CE credits)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignancy to affect the oral cavity.  This program will provide the clinician with an understanding of the demographics, clinical appearance and causes of various types of oral SCC.  Optimal patient outcome depends on early diagnosis, but unfortunately the majority of patients are diagnosed in advanced disease stages.  Another objective is to use clinical cases to illustrated key concepts of the diagnostic process and the multidisciplinary team management of oral SCC.  Other topics to be reviewed are various treatment options and their complications, supportive care, and techniques to replace surgically resected oral tissues.

Topics Covered:

  • Clinical appearance and high-risk sites for oral SCC
  • Grading and staging of oral SCC and patient prognosis
  • Treatment of oral SCC: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, PUVA, immune-modulating therapy
  • Challenges to restoring function and esthetics after oral SCC treatment

Recommended for...Dentists, Students, Hygienists and Assistants.
