Comprehensive Periodontal Therapy: Treating Patients... Not Just Pockets

Recently, the AAP called upon us to include periodontal/systemic interrelationships as part of Comprehensive Periodontal Therapy. (CPD) This course will provide a thorough review of CPD focusing on Periodontal Disease (PD) as an inflammatory disease linked to systemic ramifications. Diabetes/Cardiovascular disease will be the main focus along with other systemic diseases /conditions. Research will be presented on the effect nonsurgical periodontal therapy has on patients' HbA1C levels. Strides in bridging the gap between the dental/medical communities will be discussed as well as ways to initiate better communication amongst patients and health care professionals for the utmost in comprehensive care.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:- recognize the importance of assessing risk factors for PD/Systemic Diseases.
- identify PD as an inflammatory disease along with the systemic ramifications.
- explain how diabetes and PD are bi-directional where one can influence the other as well as understanding the value of HbA1C levels.
- translate evidence-based research into effective patient/practitioner communication.
- analyze studies of decreased HBA1C levels through enhanced glycemic control due to non-surgical periodontal therapy utilizing sub microbial antibiotics as well as localized chemo-therapeutics.
- state and recognize oral conditions related to diabetes.
- recognize xerostomia and its effect on the oral cavity.
- apply appropriate non-surgical treatment modalities for PD.
- utilize proper insurance coding and social networking to maximize case acceptance.I
- identify the high-risk patient and refer for proper comprehensive management.
- recognize themselves as a valuable member of their patients' Health Care Team.

Lauren Gueits, RDH Oral Health Educator, Clinician, National Lecturer, Author, Practice Management/Marketing Consultant, Key Opinion Leader: Lauren Gueits, a clinician of 20 years and a recipient of the 2010 Sunstar Award of Distinction, lectures nationally to health professionals on the oral/systemic connection. She was featured in the inaugural edition of "Grand Rounds" and brought national attention when NBC/ABC, featured her story on disclosing diabetes through her dental exam. She was the first RDH to present at the 2011 American Association of Diabetes Educators Symposium and co-authored the Nov 2011 issue of RDH magazine's featured article "DYNAMIC DUOS" focusing on medical/dental collaboration. Lauren received her dental hygiene degree from SUNY Farmingdale, 1991 and is a member of ADHA, AAOSH.
