Identifying Methamphetamine Abuse and Developing a Treatment Protocol

Do you know the signs and symptoms of the use of the highly addictive drug Meth?  Do you know how to treat a patient who is using or has used meth in the past?  With the fivefold increase of the use of this drug in the past decade, dental professionals are treating meth patient's daily, even if they don't know it!  Noel has made it her mission to equip dental professionals with the information needed to treat these patients.  Through the use of visuals, personal experience and handouts, Noel equips the audience for intervention as well as safe dental treatment.

 

Topics Covered:

  • Understand the history of methamphetamine abuse.
  • Be familiar with the composition of methamphetamines and manufacturing process
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of methamphetamine use.
  • Identify the effects of methamphetamine use on the human body.
  • Utilize skills in patient interaction, treatment planning and preventative strategies.

In diverse settings, dental professionals serve cultural awareness and understanding of special needs are vital parts of the dental professional's role in education and treatment.  Noel has "gone where no man would go" to serve a variety of populations.  She has taken her backpack out into the streets reaching out to those who have no place to call home, and has run free dental clinics for over 20 years.  She has developed a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the issue of prevention and understanding for both the professional and the patient.  This course is a must for those who want to make a difference.

  • Identify the special needs and culture of the underserved population.
  • Understanding the barriers to care.
  • Formulate strategies to improve access to care.
  • Design environments for treatment.
  • Develop preventive treatment plans.

Noel Brandon-Kelsch, RDH is a speaker and writer in Alternative Practice.  She is passionate about oral health and has the uncanny ability to motivate and enlighten through her unique humor and cutting edge information.  She takes tough subject matter and presents it in such an interesting way that it becomes thought provoking, even to those not involved in her industry.  Noel is the immediate past president of the California Dental Hygienists Association, board member of Simi Valley Free Clinic, columnist for RDH Magazine and has won many national awards including the 2009 ADHA Master Clinician award.
