The use of dietary supplements has become commonplace in the United States. Some nutritional supplements have been shown through scientific investigation to benefit oral and overall health. However, there remain concerns regarding safety and quality. All members of the health care team should be familiar with the evidence of safety and benefit for the most commonly used dietary supplements to enhance patient outcomes and reduce risk of adverse events associated with dental procedures. Tieraona Low Dog, MD is the fellowship director for the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, overseeing all aspects of the training of physicians and nurse practitioners in integrative medicine. She most recently authored National Geographic’s Healthy at Home as well as Life is Your Best Medicine.
Dr. Low Dog was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. She served as the elected chair of the US Pharmacopeia Dietary Supplements and Botanicals Expert Panel for more than a decade. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Council for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
