General Dentist as Orthodontist: Early Orthodontic Treatment

Alumni Speaker Series

Friday, November 5, 2010

9:00am-12:00pm (3 CE credits)

Time magazine predicted that the orthodontic specialist would become extinct in the 21st. century.  Applied, advanced technology has opened the door for general dentists to provide orthodontic treatment. This lecture will investigate the challenges and opportunities the general dentist may encounter in accepting this new role.  The fashionable new paradigm, Early Orthodontic Treatment, has blurred the line between phase I, mixed dentition interceptive orthodontic treatment and phase II, adult dentition full braces.  This lecture will investigate the pros and cons of early orthodontic treatment and all of its ramifications.

Topics Covered:

  • History of the changing role of the general dentist
  • Orthodontic treatment modalities available and their relative merits
  • Identifying a few key points in cephalometric radiograph analysis
  • Guidelines for rating the relative difficulty of orthodontic cases
  • History of the development of the concept of early orthodontic treatment
  • Diagnosis and treatment of cases requiring Interceptive orthodontic treatment
  • Evaluation of traditional phase II finished cases determining if they would have benefited from early orthodontic treatment
  • Ethical and moral considerations of early orthodontic treatment

Recommended for… entire dental team including students.
