This Individualized Training Program in
Implant Dentistry at the UBSDM is designed for dental clinicians from the
community to be able to place dental implants in their own private practice
patient(s) and perform advanced implant surgery under close supervision of
UBSDM Faculty.
The practitioner meets with the UBSDM supervising implant faculty at lease once prior to surgery, depending on the complexity of the case. The surgical
planning is based on the restorative treatment that is usually performed by the
clinician in his/her private practice. The surgical plan includes the aid of
casts, CBCTs, and any other diagnostic tool(s)needed. Flap design, grafting
techniques, graft materials, suturing techniques are reviewed as part of the planning.
On the day of the surgery, the treating
clinician, staff members and their patient report to the UBSDM Implant Center. The
UBSDM clinical team, including two surgical assistants and the supervising
faculty, convene and oversee the surgery. The surgical dental assistants
provide services such as draping and preparing the patient, preparing the
surgical field, and providing support to the participants, including assistance
with appropriate surgical attire. Additionally, during the procedure(s), they
provide instruments, tools, materials, and any other aid the surgery may
require. The surgery is performed according to plan, and radiographs are taken.
Post-operative patient instructions are given to the participating dentist and
their staff.
The UBSDM surgical assistants are responsible
for re-setting the surgical field, cleaning up the room and preparing for the
next surgical procedure.
